A common name for a style of Kabuki performance, or a dance drama based on it. It is an adaptation of a passage from "Soga Monogatari" and the Kōwaka dance "Wada no Sakamori," in which Soga Goro grabs his brother Juro's armor and runs off to save him from danger, but Kobayashi Asahina holds him back, but as they pull against each other, the armor's lacing is torn off due to their great strength. It was first made into a Kabuki play in 1688 (Genroku 1), and the rough play "Tsuwamono Kongen Soga," performed by Goro played by Ichikawa Danjūrō I and Asahina played by Nakamura Denkurō I at the Nakamuraza in Edo in May 1698, is the basis for the performance. Afterwards, many versions were created as Nagauta dance dramas, but the definitive version that has been passed down to this day is "Shofudatsuki Kongen Kusazuri" (commonly known as "Shofudatsuki"; music by Kineya Rokusaburo IV and choreography by Fujima Daisuke), performed in January 1814 (Bunka 11) at the Morita-za in Edo by Goro of Danjūrō 7th and Asahina of Ichikawa Omezo 1st. Incidentally, the first time Asahina was cast in a female role was in "Kikuju no Kusazuri" (commonly known as "Ikioi") in 1787 (Tenmei 7), but even in "Shofudatsuki", the form in which Wada's Maizuru is used instead of Asahina due to the actor's convenience is still often performed today.
