Fin thistle - Fin thistle
It is named "Heathistle" because the stem has wings, but unlike Cirsium , the pappus is not feathery (illustration). It is a biennial plant of the Asteraceae family that grows at the foot of mountains, in fields, on river banks and roadsides. The stem is upright, about 1m tall, and has two vertical wings. The wings also have thorns. The leaves are alternate, pinnate, medium to deep lobes and have thorns on the edges. The undersides of the leaves are initially covered with white spider hairs. The flowering season is May to July. Flower heads grow at the ends of the branches. The florets are all the same shape and bisexual. The corolla is reddish purple, or occasionally white.
