A general term for the interest in and practices based on religions and philosophies of Eastern origin, such as Zen, yoga, tantrism based on Hare Krishna, Taoism, and the I Ching, which spread mainly in the United States from the 1960s. The term "neo" refers to the popularity of Eastern thought in the 19th century, which influenced such figures as R.W. Emerson and H.D. Thoreau. In the 19th century, only a small number of intellectuals showed interest, but the Eastern religions that spread in the 1960s were practiced by millions of people.
