Spandau

Japanese: Spandau
Spandau

[From trading city to palace city]
The two towns of Berlin and Kölln (Alt Kölln), which are the origins of modern Berlin, first appeared in historical documents in 1237 and 1244. Located at the crossing of the Spree River on the trade route from Magdeburg and Leipzig to the Oder River, the two cities developed as commodity collection centers, unlike Spandau and Köpenick (which were merged into Berlin in 1912) which had a strong military character. In 1307, they were integrated in terms of justice and administration, and in 1359 they joined the Hanseatic League, becoming the most important cities in Brandenburg. In the following 15th century, the autonomy of the two cities was taken away by the Hohenzollern family, who came to control the Electorate of Brandenburg, despite the resistance of the citizens (the 1448 uprising known as the Berlin Discontents), but from the end of the 15th century onwards, Berlin and Kölln began to develop a new way as the electorate's castle towns, leveraging trade centered on the court.
