…(3) Subject Matter In choosing their subjects, they followed the lead of the previous generation of Realist painters, who had turned their backs on religious, mythological and historical painting, and instead focused on contemporary customs, civic genres such as portraits and still lifes, and everyday scenes from their surroundings.
[Group Exhibition]
The painters who became the Impressionist group met in 1863 in the studio of Charles Gleyre (1806-74) (Monet, Sisley, Renoir, Bazille), and were joined by Pissarro and Cézanne, who had known Monet for some time at the Académie Suisse. Through Pissarro, Morisot also joined, and they met in the studios of Manet and Bazille, as well as in cafes such as the Brasserie des Martyrs, Guerbois, and Nouvelle Ataine, where they made friends with critics and went out to create their works, gradually forming a group.
