It can be obtained by dissolving hydrogen bromide in water, by reducing bromine water with hydrogen, hydrogen sulfide, or sulfur dioxide, or by distilling a solution of potassium bromide in concentrated sulfuric acid. It is a colorless, strong acid with some reducing properties. Its azeotropic mixture with water has a composition of 47.63% and boils at 124.3 °C.
