A bird of the Lesser Cuckoo family. It is so named because of its cuckoo-cuckoo cry. Wingspan 22cm. Its back is gray-blue, and its tail is long and dark with a row of white spots. It breeds in central and southern Eurasia and southern Africa. It migrates to Japan as a summer bird from Kyushu onwards and breeds there. It leaves for the south in winter. It prefers to feed on moth larvae. It does not build its own nests, but instead lays its eggs in birds such as great reed warblers, buntings and shrikes, who then raise the chicks.
