...The city stretches along both sides of the Nile, with the present-day city of Luxor at its center. Its ancient Egyptian name was Waset, and in the Old Testament it was recorded as No Amon (meaning "city of the god Amun"), but it is unclear why the Greeks called it Thebes (Thebes) after the city of the same name in Boeotia. Its development as a city was relatively slow, beginning at the end of the Old Kingdom, and with the establishment of the 11th Dynasty based here and the reunification of the kingdom by Mentuhotep II (reigned c. 2061-c. 2010 BC), it established itself as a political and religious center (of the worship of Amun). *Some of the terminology that mentions "No Amon" is listed below.
