Pantanal (English spelling)

A large marshland stretching from the southern part of Mato Grosso State to the state of Mato Grosso do Sul in the central-western part of Brazil. It is a floodplain on the eastern bank of the upper reaches of the Paraguay River, which is a part of the Rio de la Plata River system, and consists of lowlands with an altitude of less than 100m through which numerous tributaries and distributaries, such as the Cuiabá, San Lourenço, and Tacualí, flow. Every year, the area is flooded over a wide area during the rainy season, but in the dry season it becomes one of Brazil's major cattle grazing areas. In 2000, the Pantanal Protected Area, which consists of four protected areas, was registered as a natural World Heritage Site.
