He edited the second and third parts of Ibn Ishaq's Book of Maghazi, adding annotations from other works. There is an English translation by A. Gillaume. He is said to be of a noble family in South Arabia, and he wrote the Book of the Crown of Himyarites, which deals with the ancient history of South Arabia, using the first part of the Book of Maghazi as the main material. During his father's generation, he moved from Basra to Egypt, where he spent his entire life.
