Ibn Faḍlān

Japanese: イブン･ファドラーン（英語表記）Ibn Faḍlān

A member of the mission sent by the Abbasid caliph Muqtadir. Dates of birth and death unknown. He left Baghdad in June 921, passed through Khorasan and Khwarezm, and arrived at the Bulgar royal palace on the Volga River about a year later. His Travel Report Risāla, excerpts of which appear in several Islamic geography books, is a reliable record of the situation in the north in the 10th century, particularly the living conditions, customs, and trade of the Turkish tribes, the Bulgars, and the Scandinavian Rus, who were advancing westward.

アッバース朝カリフ，ムクタディルの派遣した使節団の一員。生没年不詳。921年6月バグダードを出発，ホラーサーン，ホラズム地方を経由して，約1年後にボルガ河畔のブルガール族の王居に到着した。彼による《旅行報告書Risāla》は，抄本としていくつかのイスラム地理書にみえており，10世紀の北方情勢，とくに西進を続けるトルコ系諸部族，ブルガール族，スカンディナ･ルス族に関する生活状況，風俗や貿易などを伝える確かな記録である。
