Tarfaya

…Although it was repeatedly invaded by the regional power Morocco to the north, its rule did not continue, and although it did not form a centralized state, it maintained a united region. From the second half of the 19th century, Spain began to make a full-scale advance into Western Sahara, establishing a trading post in Rio de Oro (1884), and establishing its sphere of influence through a compromise with France (1912). In 1934, it occupied the interior as well, and Saghia al-Hamra and Rio de Oro were incorporated into the same colonial administrative region as Ifni and Tarfaya as Spanish West Africa. After Moroccan independence (1956), Spain returned Tarfaya to Morocco and separated Ifni (returned in 1969), and continued its colonial rule in Western Sahara while promoting economic development. …
