Dentistry - Only

A branch of medicine that deals with the prevention and treatment of diseases that occur in teeth, periodontal tissues, oral mucosa, and jawbone. Dentists perform treatment, assisted by nurses, dental hygienists, and dental technicians who assist with dental treatment or the production of dentures and other appliances. Treatment can be categorized into conservative dental treatment, oral surgery, prosthetic dental treatment, orthodontic treatment, and pediatric dental treatment. Considering the type of treatment, dentistry belongs to the surgical department in the medical classification.

医学の一分科で、歯、歯周組織、口腔(こうくう)粘膜、顎骨(がくこつ)などに生じる疾患の予防と治療を取り扱う分野をいう。治療には歯科医師があたり、治療の補助者として看護師・歯科衛生士・歯科技工士がおり、これら補助者は歯科治療の介助あるいは義歯その他の製作にあたっている。治療内容によって区分すると、保存歯科治療、口腔外科治療、補綴(ほてつ)歯科治療、矯正歯科治療、小児歯科治療に分けられる。歯科は、その処置内容から考えると、医科の分類では外科に属する。
