A former town in Hata District, southwestern Kochi Prefecture. Located in the upper reaches of the Shimanto River, the town is rich in forest resources, producing timber such as cedar, cypress, and hemlock. The main settlement is Tano, near the confluence of the Shimanto River and the Yusuhara River. Chestnuts, tea, and ginger are also produced here. The Yodo Line runs through the town. In March 2006, it merged with Kubokawa Town, Takaoka District, and Towa Village, Hata District, to become Shimanto Town, Takaoka District. Area: 199.32 km2 . Population: 3,344 (2003). 高知県南西部,幡多(はた)郡の旧町。四万十(しまんと)川上流域を占め,山林資源が豊富で,スギ,ヒノキ,ツガなどの用材を産出。中心集落は四万十川と檮原(ゆすはら)川の合流点に近い田野々。クリ,茶,ショウガなども産する。予土線が通じる。2006年3月,高岡郡窪川町,幡多郡十和村と合併し町制,高岡郡四万十町となる。199.32km2。3344人(2003)。
