Ibn Gabirol

A Jewish poet and philosopher born in Malaga, Andalusia, c. 1021-c. 1058, and died in Valencia. His Hebrew name was Solomon ben Judah, and his Latin name was Avicebron or Avencebrol. He wrote many poems in Hebrew and a moral book in Arabic, but his most important work is a long metaphysical treatise written in the form of a dialogue. The original Arabic text of this work has been lost, and only partial quotations remain. However, in the 12th century, the translator John of Toledo, with the help of Dominicus Gundissalinus, translated it into Latin under the title The Fountain of Youth.

アンダルスのマラガに生まれ，バレンシアで没したユダヤ系の詩人，哲学者。ヘブライ名Solomon ben Judah，ラテン名アビケブロンAvicebronまたはアベンケブロルAvencebrol。ヘブライ語で書かれた多くの詩，アラビア語の道徳書があるが，最も重要な著作は対話形式でつづられた長い形而上学的論考である。この書のアラビア語原著は散逸しており，部分的な引用が残されているばかりである。ただし12世紀にトレドの翻訳家ヨハネスが，ドミニクス･グンディッサリヌスDominicus Gundissalinusの助力をえて《生命の泉》という題でラテン語訳を行っている。
