1788‐1873 British telegraph and meteorological engineer. Born in London. In 1816 he laid 10 miles of electric wire in the garden of his house and successfully conducted an experiment in wired telegraphy, becoming a pioneer in the establishment of practical telegraph technology. In 1843 he became honorary director of the British Association's Meteorological Observatory, and in 1845 developed a photographic continuous automatic weather display device, which was adopted by many weather observatories. Other inventions he made include a method of keeping the altitude of a kite used for weather observation constant (1847).
