British telegraph and meteorological engineer. Born in London. In 1816 he laid 10 miles of electric wire in the garden of his house and successfully conducted an experiment in wired telegraphy, becoming a pioneer in the establishment of practical telegraph technology. In 1843 he became honorary director of the British Association's Meteorological Observatory, and in 1845 developed a photographic continuous automatic weather display device, which was adopted by many weather observatories. Other inventions he made include a method of keeping the altitude of a kite used for weather observation constant (1847). [Furukawa Yasushi]

イギリスの電信･気象技術者。ロンドンに生まれる。1816年自宅の庭に10マイルの電線を敷き，有線電信による通信実験に成功，実用的電信技術確立の先駆となった。43年英国科学振興協会の気象台の名誉所長となり，45年写真式の連続自動気象表示装置を開発。この装置は多くの気象観測所で採用された。このほか，気象観測用のたこ(凧)の高度を一定に保つ方法の発明(1847)などがある。【古川安】
