A region that adopted a currency system linked to the yen and used the yen as a settlement currency. During the global depression of the 1930s, several exclusive economic blocs were created that included the mother country and its colonies. Japan caused the Manchurian Incident in 1931 (Showa 6), and expanded its influence to Manchuria (northeast China), Mengjiang, North China, Central China, and the southern regions with the start of the Pacific War. In these regions, the currencies that had been in circulation up until then were driven out, and new currencies linked to the yen were created. These included Manchurian Central Bank notes, Mengjiang Bank notes, and the United Reserve Bank of China notes. Settlements with these regions could be made in yen, without gold or foreign currency. The yen bloc collapsed with Japan's defeat in World War II. [Tsuchiya Rokuro] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
