Depending on how the ikat threads are used, they are divided into (1) warp ikat, (2) weft ikat, (3) warp and weft ikat (where the warp and weft ikat threads form separate patterns), and (4) double ikat (where the warp and weft ikat threads overlap to form a single pattern). Furthermore, ikat threads that are simply hung down, as seen on the loincloths of primitive people, are called (5) proto-ikat.
