An aquatic fungus of the Blastocladiales order of phycomycetes. When cultivated in water on hemp seeds, it grows to about 8 mm in length, branching into clusters. Several zoosporangia grow in chains at the tips of the hyphae, and zoospores with single hairs at their rear ends swim out from the middle. It is widely distributed in dry rice fields. The hyphae produce organs with pores in their membranes called thick membrane sacs, which later split open to reveal other zoosporangia that release zoospores. The hyphae that grow from these zoosporangia produce male and female organs, and sexual reproduction takes place. Males produce small gametes in red small gametangia, and females produce large gametes in colorless large gametangia, and the two gametes fuse during movement in the water.

藻菌類ブラストクラディア目の水生菌。水中でアサの実などに培養すると，長さ 8mmぐらい，二叉に分岐を繰返して房状になる。菌糸の先端に数個の遊走子嚢を鎖生し，中から後端に単毛をもつ遊走子が泳ぎ出す。乾田に広く分布する。なおこの菌糸には厚膜嚢という膜に孔紋をもった器官を生じ，これはのちに裂けて中から別の遊走子嚢が顔を出して，遊走子を送り出す。この遊走子が伸びて生じた菌糸に雄，雌の器官を生じ，有性生殖を行う。雄性は紅色の小配偶子嚢で小配偶子を，雌性は無色の大配偶子嚢で大配偶子を生じ，両配偶子は水中で運動中に接合する。
