A view or view of a city. A concept that captures the landscape from the visual and cultural elements of a city, used mainly in the fields of architecture and urban engineering. The term first appeared in English in 1880, when it was used to describe a painting of a city in contrast to a landscape painting. In Townscape (1961), Karen G. Cullen defined townscape as a three-dimensional spatial composition created by the gathering of multiple buildings, as well as trees, water, transportation, and advertisements, and proposed a technique for "relat-ing" the various components of the urban landscape to achieve visual pleasure.
