Shishakli, A.

During the French Mandate, he was a leader of the National Bloc and took the lead in the independence movement. He was head of the Syrian delegation to the Franco-Syrian Alliance Treaty in 1936, and served as president from 1936 to 1939. After the coup d'état of Sāmī Ḥinnāwī (1898-1950) in August 1949, he became prime minister, and after the coup d'état of Adīb Shishaklī (1909-64) in December of the same year, he became president, but resigned in 1951 in opposition to the military dictatorship. After the collapse of the military regime in 1954, he returned to the presidency and resigned again in 1955.
