The northernmost island in the Pacific coastal archipelago in southern Chile, South America. Located south of Puerto Montt, it is separated from the mainland by the narrow Strait of Chacao and the Bay of Corcovado. It is rich in forests, and forestry, fishing, and livestock farming are practiced. Darwin visited it in 1834. It was hit by an earthquake in 1960. It has port towns such as Ancud and Castro.
