A former town in Sakai County, straddling the Fukui Plain and the Kaetsu Plateau in northern Fukui Prefecture. The main settlement faces the Takeda River, a tributary of the Kuzuryu River, and developed as a key location for land and water transport, with the Hokuriku Main Line and Hokuriku Expressway passing through. In addition to the textile industry that has existed since the Meiji period, the town also has a machinery industry. Yoshizaki Gobo is located here. 福井県北部,福井平野と加越台地にまたがる坂井郡の旧町。主集落は九頭竜(くずりゅう)川の支流竹田川に臨む水陸交通の要地として発達,北陸本線,北陸自動車道が通じる。明治以来の繊維工業のほか機械工業も行う。吉崎御坊がある。2004年3月坂井郡芦原町と合併し,あわら市となる。79.08km2。1万8149人(2003)。
