A state in the northeastern United States. Abbreviated as NY. Also known as the Empire State. It borders the Atlantic Ocean to the south, Canada to the north, and Lake Ontario and Lake Erie to the northwest. The end of the Appalachian Mountains, which run through the east, is divided into the Adirondack and Catskill mountain ranges by the Mohawk River, and the Hudson River flows south to the east. The state is eroded by ice and has many glacial lakes. Agriculture is practiced in the outskirts, and the state produces fruits such as apples, grapes, strawberries, and cherries, as well as maple syrup and eggs. Various industries have developed around New York City, and Rochester and Buffalo are centers of heavy industry such as steel. It became a Dutch colony in 1604 and a British colony in 1664.
