…Modulation, by definition, presupposes the existence of tonality, so modulation cannot occur in modern atonal music. There are various types of modulations, depending on the relationship between the preceding and succeeding keys (close and distant modulations mentioned above), the stability of the new key (definite and transitional modulations), and the modulation method (diatonic modulations using a chord common to both keys, chromatic modulations using a chord that does not exist in one or both keys, enharmonic modulations using enharmonic equivalents, etc.), and in music education, they are studied as an important part of composition theory, especially harmony. As mentioned above, modulation in the narrow sense occurs in Western tonal music, but in non-Western music, when a change of mode or a shift of the central note is observed, the term modulation is often used to explain this. …
