A large perennial plant of the Cyperaceae family found in marshes and riverside wetlands (illustration). The stems rise from short, thick rhizomes, form sparse clumps, and grow to a height of over 1m with several nodes. The nodes are brown and the internodes are yellowish and shiny, giving the plant the appearance of oil, hence the name "oil grass." The leaves are found at the base and nodes of the stem, long and linear, and about 1cm wide. From late summer to autumn, a large umbel appears at the top of the stem, which branches several times and produces a very large number of densely growing brown elliptical spikelets.
