A city in southern Quebec, Canada. Its English name is Three Rivers. Urban population: 140,891 (1992). Settled by the French in 1610, it is one of the oldest cities in Canada, with Indians, fur traders, missionaries, navigators, and soldiers gathering to trade furs. Located on the north bank of the St. Lawrence River, halfway between Montreal and Quebec, it has long been an important hub for river traffic. Hydroelectric power is also produced.
