An industrial city in southeastern Massachusetts, USA. Population 95,000 (1994). Facing Buzzard Bay, it was one of the world's leading whaling bases in the first half of the 19th century. Today, it is a fishing port and an industrial city that produces clothing, textiles, electrical machinery, electrical parts, rubber products, and dyes. It is home to the Bourne Whaling Museum and the Old Dartmouth Historical Society, and the Free Public Library is known for its collection of whaling-related materials.
