1725‐1807 Corsican patriot and politician. In 1739 he fled to Naples with his father, Giacinto, who fought against Genoese rule in Corsica and led the independence movement. After serving in the military in Naples, he returned to Corsica in 1754, where the independence revolution was continuing under difficult circumstances. The following year, he was elected commander-in-chief of the independent government, and prepared a draft constitution that was approved by the island's highest decision-making body (consulta). Based on this, he established administrative, financial, judicial, and military systems, and stripped the privileges of the clergy. In 68, Genoa, finding rule over Corsica a burden, ceded the island to France, and in 69 he fled to England as attacks by the French army intensified.
