Three Dolls - Mitsuningyo

Japanese: 三人形 - みつにんぎょう
Three Dolls - Mitsuningyo
The title of a Kabuki dance piece. Tokiwazu. One of the three-part dance series "Sono Sugata Hana no Utsushie." First performed at the Edo Nakamuraza in March 1818 (Bunsei 1). Lyrics by Sakurada Jisuke II, music by Kishizawa Uwasa. Choreography by Fujima Kanjuro I. Performers are Bando Mitsugoro III, Nakamura Shikan (later Nakamura Utaemon III), and Iwai Hanshiro V. Set in Nakanomachi, Yoshiwara, Edo, the three dancers are a Tanzen samurai, a Tanzen slave, and a courtesan. The piece likens the extravagant customs of these three people to dolls, and is characterized by their old-fashioned Tanzen style. [Kisaragi Aoko]
