A town in Yamamoto County in northern Akita Prefecture. It occupies the Fujikoto River and Kasuge River basins, tributaries of the Yoneshiro River. Rice cultivation is the town's main industry. The main settlement is Fujikoto. The Kasuge River is known for its sweetfish, and upstream is the Subari Valley. In 1993, the Shirakami Mountains were registered on the World Heritage List of Natural Heritage Sites under the World Heritage Convention. 282.13 km2 . 3,848 people (2010).
