〘Noun〙① A piece of straw woven into a bale-like shape about 40-50cm high and 30cm in diameter. In the Tohoku and Hokuriku regions, when there is heavy snowfall, people wear one on each foot to compact the snow and make a path. [Season: Winter] [Essay: Snowy Road (1790)]② A bale buried in the middle of the outer slope of the outer sumo ring for people to put their feet on.

〘名〙① 藁(わら)を高さ四〇~五〇センチメートル・直径約三〇センチメートルぐらいの俵のような形に編んだもの。東北・北陸地方で大雪のときに両足に一つずつはいて雪を踏み固めて道をつけるのに用いる。《季・冬》 〔随筆・雪のふる道(1790)〕② 相撲の土俵で、足をかけるために外土俵の外側の斜面中ほどに埋めてある俵。
