622‐692 He was the pretender caliph of Mecca. His father was Zubayr, a sahaba (companion of Muhammad), and his mother was Asma, the eldest daughter of Abu Bakr. He was the first son born to the Muhajirun (migrants to Medina) after the Hijra. He did not recognize the hereditary succession to the caliphate by Yazid I of the Umayyad dynasty, and when Yazid I died in 683 and Muawiyah II succeeded him to the hereditary caliphate, he proclaimed himself caliph in Mecca and gained independence from the Umayyad dynasty. He was also recognized as caliph in Iraq and Egypt, and at one time ruled over more than half of Syria, but he lacked practical governance and was eventually besieged by the army of Hajjaj bin Yusuf and killed in battle in Mecca in 692.
