A bird of the family Rallidae (illustration) in the order Grui. Total length is about 33 cm. Its entire body is gray-black with a brownish back and white stripes on its sides. The undertail coverts are white. The tip of the beak is yellow and the base and front plate are red. The long legs and toes are yellowish-green, and the exposed parts of the thighs are reddish. Except for the Australian region, it is widely distributed from temperate to tropical regions around the world, and those that breed in cold regions migrate to warm regions in winter to spend the winter. In Japan, it is a summer bird in Hokkaido and northern Honshu, and a resident bird in central and southern Honshu, and is particularly numerous in southern Japan.

ツル目クイナ科の鳥（イラスト）。全長約33cm。全身灰黒色で，背面は褐色みを帯び，わきに白い横斑がある。下尾筒は白い。くちばしは先端が黄色く，基部と額板は赤い。長い脚とあしゆびは黄緑色で，ももの露出部は赤みを帯びている。オーストラリア区を除き，世界中の温帯から熱帯に広く分布し，寒冷地で繁殖しているものは冬季暖地に渡って越冬する。日本では，北海道や本州北部では夏鳥，本州中部以南では留鳥で，とくに南日本では数が多い。
