...Under the subsequent treaty, Cantemir fled to Russia, where he was well received by Peter the Great, and relations with Russia were deepened thereafter. In order to further strengthen its rule over Moldova, the Ottoman government appointed Nicolae Mavrocordat (reigned 1709-10, 1709-11-15), a Greek Phanariot, as Duke, and the Phanariot period lasted until 1821. During this period, not only was the Duke not elected from among the local nobility, but the country's autonomy was severely restricted, including the loss of diplomatic rights and the reduction of its military force.
