[Coastal Voyage]
The voyage follows the coastline almost entirely. Since this voyage is conducted not far from land, there are fewer other ships than in narrow channel voyages, and features are often used to determine position rather than to avoid them. Along the coast of Japan and other areas with a lot of ship traffic, lane separation strips are provided to minimize the chance of encounters.

In the Northern Hemisphere, for example, a ship's current position on the ocean, where the coast is not visible, can be determined by measuring the altitude of the North Star to determine its approximate latitude. The astrolabe is a well-known instrument for measuring the altitude of celestial bodies (stars, moon, sun), but in modern times a sextant equipped with a reflector and telescope is used.
