A small tree frog (illustration) of the Hylidae family. Distributed throughout Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, it is commonly seen in plains, low mountain forests, around rice paddies, and in residential yards and hedges. It lives on grass and shrubs, and does not enter water except during breeding season. It is about 3-4 cm long, with females being slightly larger. It has well-developed suckers on the tips of each finger of its four limbs, allowing it to jump out in search of insects and spiders, and to land lightly on branches and leaves. It is a good example of protective coloration due to its skillful body color change, changing from yellow-green to gray-brown to dark brown depending on the surrounding conditions, and dark spots appear on its back and limbs.
