A district at the mouth of the Sumida River in the southern part of Chuo Ward, Tokyo. The artificial island was built on a low-lying, swampy delta next to Tsukudajima and land reclamation began in 1885 (Meiji 18), completing it in 1892. It was originally called Tsukishima, but was later renamed Tsukishima. Tsukuda, where Tsukudajima and Ishikawajima once stood, is to the northeast, while Kachidoki and Toyomi are to the southwest, forming a single island. On the southeast, across the Asashio Canal, is Harumi (Shingetsushima). The area has good water transportation, and the east side is used as a factory site, and the west side is used as a warehouse. It is connected to Tsukiji by Kachidoki Bridge on the Sumida River, and to Koto Ward on the opposite bank of the Harumi Canal by Aioi Bridge, where Kiyosumi Street runs.
