This clan descended from Prince Takechi, son of Emperor Tenmu. From the Nara period to the early Heian period, many of the prince's descendants were given the surname Takashina no Mahito, but the descendants of the prince's fifth-generation grandson Mineo were particularly prosperous. In the mid-Heian period, Takako, the daughter of Mineo's fourth-generation grandson Naritada, married the regent Fujiwara no Michitaka and gave birth to Minister of the Interior Korechika and Empress Teishi. The clan prospered greatly after this, and Naritada was promoted to the rank of Junior Second Rank and given the surname Ason. After that, the family produced many powerful people, such as Fujiwara no Michinaga's trusted vassal Narito, Shirakawa-in's trusted vassal Tameaki, and Goshirakawa-in's trusted vassal Yasutsune, and there was no end to those who rose to the rank of nobles until the Nanboku-cho period. Tango no Tsubone Eishi, famous as the favorite concubine of Goshirakawa-in, was also from the family. Some also called themselves the Taka clan for short, and Takano Moronao, the steward of Ashikaga Takauji, and his family are particularly famous.
