A city in the state of Rio de Janeiro in southeastern Brazil. It faces Rio de Janeiro at the mouth of Guanabara Bay and serves as a residential satellite city of the city. Population 459,451 (2000). Ferries frequently run between Rio and Guanabara Bay, but the 14-kilometer Niterói Bridge was completed in 1974, and the two cities are becoming more integrated. Shipbuilding, metalworking, food processing, and other industries are based here. It is known as a seaside resort with excellent bathing beaches, and there are many famous places and historical sites, such as the Church of Boa Viagem.
