...A shrub of the Polygonaceae family native to the West Indies and tropical America. As its Japanese name Hamabebudo (hamabe grape) suggests, it grows well near the coast and is sometimes planted as a windbreak. The branches grow in a slightly zigzag pattern and reach a height of about 6m. The leaves are thick, leathery, glossy, cordate, 15-18cm wide, and the midribs are reddish. In summer, the upper leaf axils produce racemes 15-25cm long that contain numerous fragrant yellow-white flowers. Eventually, the tepals become fleshy and produce grape-like fruits over 1cm in diameter that hang down. ...
