A hard material used mainly for cutting tools. The English title means "solidified carbide alloy" and originally it was a kind of cermet made by sintering tungsten carbide powder with cobalt as a binder. In Japan, it refers to alloys with a Rockwell hardness of H _R A85 (equivalent to Vickers hardness of H _V about 900) or higher, even if they are not WC-Co alloys (carbides). However, the mainstream of ceramics is carbides (WC, TiC, TaC, NbC, Cr ₃ C ₂ or Cr ₄ C), and nickel Ni is also used as a binder. Even among WC-Co alloys, the composition varies depending on the manufacturer, and the trademark names are also different. Widia from Germany, Igetalloy and Tungaloy from Japan, etc. are all from the same family and are used for cutting tool tips, wire drawing dies, anvils for high-pressure generating equipment, etc. Powder forming tools made of diamond, carborundum (SiC), boron carbide ( _B4C ) and other materials also belong to this category. Ceramics such as alumina ( _Al2O3 ₎ -carbide, zirconia ( _ZrO2 ₎ -yttria ( _Y2O3 ₎ , and sialon (silicon nitride-alumina-silicon nitride-alumina-aluminum nitride) are also used as hard materials. Alloys made of only metallic elements include iron-based alloys (Fe-W-Co, Fe-Co-Mo, Fe-W-Cr, Fe-W-Mo) that are precipitation hardened by heat treatment, Zirtan (W-Zr alloy), and Stellite (Co-Cr-W alloy), which are used for glass cutting, wire drawing dies, and cutting tools.

主として切削工具に用いられる硬質材料。標記の英語は「固結炭化物合金」の意味で，もともとはタングステン炭化物の粉末をコバルトを固結材として焼結した一種のサーメットである。日本では WC-Co 系合金 (炭化物) でなくてもおよそロックウェル硬さ H_RA85 (ビッカース硬さ H_V 約 900 相当) 以上のものを含めていう。しかしセラミックスとしての主流は炭化物 (WC ，TiC ，TaC ，NbC ，Cr₃C₂ または Cr₄C ) で，固結材としての金属にはニッケル Ni も用いられる。 WC-Co 系合金でも配合は製造会社により種々で，商標名も異なる。ドイツのウィディア，日本のイゲタロイ，タンガロイなどすべて同じ系統で，切削バイトチップ，線引きダイス，高圧力発生装置のアンビルなどに用いられる。ダイヤモンド，カーボランダム SiC ，炭化ホウ素 B₄C などの粉末成形工具も同系統である。アルミナ Al₂O₃ -炭化物系，ジルコニア Z_rO₂ -イットリア Y₂O₃ 系，サイアロン (窒化ケイ素-アルミナ-窒化ケイ素-アルミナ-窒化アルミニウム系) などのセラミックスも硬質材料として用いられる。金属元素のみの合金としては鉄基の合金 (Fe-W-Co 系，Fe-Co-Mo 系，Fe-W-Cr 系，Fe-W-Mo 系) を熱処理によって析出硬化したもの，ジルタン (W-Zr 合金) ，ステライト (Co-Cr-W 合金) などがあり，ガラス切り，線引きダイス，切削工具に使われる。
