Angle of attack

The angle of attack is the angle between the reference line (chord line) of the cross section of an airplane's wing and the direction of the airplane's flight, i.e., the relative direction of the airflow. The lift of the wing changes depending on the angle of attack. An airplane's lift increases when the angle of attack of the wing is increased, and decreases when the speed decreases. Therefore, by increasing the angle of attack and decreasing the speed, lift and gravity become equal, and the airplane can fly level.

飛行機などの翼の断面の基準線 (翼弦線) と飛行機の進行方向，すなわち相対的な気流の方向とがつくる角度をいう。迎え角を変えることによって，翼の揚力が変化する。飛行機の揚力は翼の迎え角を大きくすると増加し，速度が減少すると小さくなる。そのため迎え角を大きくし，速度を減少すれば，揚力と重力が等しくなり，水平飛行を行なうことができる。
