Ife - Ife (English spelling)

An ancient city located 70 km east of Ibadan in Oshun State, western Nigeria, West Africa. Population 289,500 (1995). Officially called Ile-Ife, it is revered as the ancestral land of the Ooni, the king of the Yoruba people. The palace of the King of Ife still remains in the center of the town, and it also houses the Ife Museum, known for its bronze and terracotta head statues. The town has poor access to the train station and roads to the coast, and did not develop much even in the 1950s and 1960s when other cities developed as cocoa centers. The University of Ife, which boasts a vast campus, is located in the western suburbs. There is a serious political issue in the conflict between the Ile-Ife area, where the old residents live, and the Modakeke-Ife area, where new residents live, over traditional land ownership and other issues.

西アフリカ、ナイジェリア西部、オシュン州、イバダン東方70キロメートルにある古都。人口28万9500（1995）。正式にはイレ・イフェとよばれ、ヨルバ人の王オニの祖先の地としてあがめられている。町の中心にはイフェの王の王宮がいまも残り、そこにはイフェ博物館もあり、ブロンズやテラコッタの頭部像が知られる。鉄道駅へも、海岸部への道路も不便で、他の諸都市がココア集積地として発展した1950～60年代にも、あまり発展しなかった。西方郊外には、広大なキャンパスを誇るイフェ大学がある。旧住民の住むイレ・イフェ地区と、新住民の住むモダケケ・イフェ地区とが、伝統的土地所有権などをめぐって対立し、深刻な政治問題となっている。
