...Maracas, an instrument made of dried gourds or maraca nuts with a few pebbles inside and a handle attached to it for shaking, are widely used among the Native Americans, and are a typical example of a rattle. Other instruments that are included in this type of idiophone include the ancient Egyptian sistrum, which is made by shaking a metal frame with a few thin metal rods or metal rings loosely threaded through it, and the Japanese naruko, which is made of wood or bamboo and has a rope attached to it to make it sound indirectly. Rattles are generally used in religious ceremonies and the songs and dances that accompany them.
