He was a music hall entertainer who started out in pantomime sports, and made his film debut with The Good-Looking Man (1947), about a village postman who fails to imitate the postman in an American film. He wrote, directed, and starred in five full-length comedies. His second film, My Uncle's Holiday (1952), and subsequent films featured the protagonist Monsieur Hulot, a tall, vagabond man in short trousers, a pipe and an umbrella, and his associates performing "elegant" sight gags that were not as intense as Spastic's. His third film, My Uncle (1958), was his signature work, and he was called the "French Chaplin" for its gentle satire of mechanical civilization and for the fact that Mr. Hulot himself hardly spoke at all. ...
