A province in northwest China. It is also called Gan or Long. Its capital is Lanzhou. The Qilian Mountains form the border with Qinghai Province in the west, and between them and the Gobi Desert lies the 1,000 km long Gansu (also known as Hexi) Corridor. This corridor has been a trade route connecting the Western Regions with China since ancient times. The Lanzhou Plain in the southeast and the oases in the corridor area are the centers of agriculture and industry, and livestock farming is also practiced on the western grasslands. Mineral products include coal, gold, silver, copper, iron, and oil. Industries such as steel, machinery, petrochemicals, and nuclear power have flourished in Lanzhou and Yumen. Railways connect the province to various areas: Longhai (Lianyungang to Lanzhou), Lanxin (Lanzhou to Urumqi), Baolan (Paotou to Lanzhou), and Lanqing (Lanzhou to Xining).
