Dover

Japanese: ドーバー(英語表記)Dover
Dover
Dover is a city in the southeastern corner of England, eastern Kent County. It is a port city facing the Strait of Dover, about 110 km southeast of London. The city is located in a valley cut by the River Dua into the white cliffs that rise into the Strait of Dover. In 55 BC, Caesar chose this place as the first base for his invasion of England. In the 4th century, the Saxons built a fortress. It developed into one of the major cities of England by the time of William I, and flourished as one of the Five Ports (the League of Five Ports) from the 11th century onwards. Furthermore, as it was located at the closest point to the European continent, the port developed as a major connecting port with the continent as England developed, reaching its peak in the first half of the 20th century. Even today, it is the largest port in England in terms of passenger numbers, and frequent cross-channel ferries depart and arrive from there to Calais and Dunkirk in France. Since the 19th century, it has developed as a seaside resort and light industry has also been established there. A lighthouse from the Roman period still remains. On clear days, you can see France on the opposite bank from the castle on the hill behind the city. Area: 312 km2 . Population: 104,490 (2001). City population: 34,087 (2001).
