The Tale of Ninsei - A Fake Story

A kana zoshi (traditional Japanese story). Author unknown. Two volumes. Completed and published between 1638 (Kan'ei 15) and 1640. As the title "Nise" (imitation) suggests, it is a parody that parodies the 125 chapters of the popular version of "The Tale of Ise" word for word. It aims to be humorous by vulgarizing the story, replacing elegant language with colloquialism and intertwining the world of classics with the social conditions and customs of the time. It is one aspect of how early modern people appreciated the classics, and it shows the intellect, sensibility, wit, and spirit of humor of early modern people. It was widely read and had a major influence on the lineage of subsequent imitation tales.

仮名草子。作者不詳。上下二巻。1638年（寛永15）から1640年までの成立刊行。書名の「仁勢」（似せ）が示すように流布本『伊勢(いせ)物語』125段のことごとくを逐語的にもじったパロディーである。雅語を俗語に置き換えたり、古典の世界を当時の世相、風俗に絡ませたりするなど、卑俗化することによって滑稽(こっけい)をねらっている。近世古典享受の一面であり、近世人の知性と感覚、機知と諧謔(かいぎゃく)の精神を示したものといえる。広く読まれ、後続の擬物語の系譜に多大な影響を与えた。
