A city on the northeastern coast of the Malaysian peninsula, near the Thai border. It lies in the alluvial lowlands of the Kelantan River and is subject to flooding during the rainy season. It is the capital of Kelantan state. Of the population of 220,000 (1991), three-quarters are Malay and less than one-quarter are Chinese. Known as a producer of traditional textiles and silverware, modern industry is underdeveloped. It is the base of operations for the conservative Pan-Malaysia Islamic Party. The beach on the northeastern outskirts of the city is where Japanese troops made a surprise landing during World War II. [Ota Isamu]
